A smartwatch is useful on a job site: you can check messages, track your steps and keep an eye on the time without pulling out a phone. But a construction site is one of the harshest places for a screen. Here is what actually damages watches, and how to prevent it.
What damages a smartwatch on site
- Impacts: bumping a wrist against steel, scaffolding, doorframes or a ladder rung.
- Abrasion: concrete dust, sand and drywall dust act like fine sandpaper on glass and bezels.
- Dropped tools: a small knock from a hammer or drill is enough to leave a mark.
- Constant friction: sleeves, gloves and materials rubbing the watch all day.
Tip 1: Cover the watch, not just the screen
Screen protectors only cover the glass. The bezel, edges and sides take just as much damage. A protective cover wraps the whole watch body, so impacts and scrapes land on the cover instead of your watch.
Tip 2: Choose protection that stays on
On a work day you will not stop to fiddle with your gear. Look for a cover that goes on without tools, keeps your original band, and holds firmly in place while you work.
Tip 3: Keep your health tracking on
A good cover should not turn your watch into a dumb brick. SANSOLID covers include a sensor cutout, so the heart-rate sensor on the back keeps working as usual.
Tip 4: Pick the right level of protection
For general trades, a flexible neoprene cover is light and comfortable all day. For rougher work, a Heavy Duty cover in firm polypropylene adds extra toughness. Not sure which? Read our Classic vs. Heavy Duty comparison.
Tip 5: Clean it regularly
Dust builds up under any cover. Rinse or wipe it down at the end of the day so grit does not sit against your watch.
